This research is based on four interviews with cellists who work within rock and pop music. It will examine which factors could be responsible for the cellists’ choice of specialisation. The aim of this thesis is to get a deeper understanding and knowledge about why one chooses to develop one’s musicianship outside traditional patterns. The theoretical background presents theories about which part the cello plays in other genres and what affects children’s choice of instrument. Furthermore research concerning gender and music is presented. The study’s results are represented by four categories: the cellists´ musical background, education, entry into rock and pop and... This research is based on four interviews with cellists who work within rock and pop music. It will examine which factors could be responsible for the cellists’ choice of specialisation. The aim of this thesis is to get a deeper understanding and knowledge about why one chooses to develop one’s musicianship outside traditional patterns. The study’s results are represented by four categories: the cellists´ musical background, education, entry into rock and pop and their experience of gender. The results show that all four persons have a similar musical background, two play more than one instrument and all have entered rock and pop music by encouragement from friends. The majority of the interviewed cellists have experienced little support by teachers to explore different genres. Mainly the women find that female cellists are overrepresented in rock and pop music and the pop and rock culture overall has a sexist attitude towards women.

I detta arbete undersöks genom fyra kvalitativa intervjuer med cellister inom rock- och popmusik, tre kvinnliga och en manlig, vilka faktorer som har påverkat deras val av inriktning. Syftet med forskningen är att få en ökad förståelse och insikt i varför man bestämmer sig att utveckla sitt musicerande utanför de traditionella ramarna. Den teoretiska bakgrunden belyser cellons roll i olika genrer och vad som styr barns instrumentval. Dessutom återges forskning som berör genus och musik. Resultaten presenteras i fyra kategorier där intervjupersonerna beskriver sin musikaliska bakgrund, utbildning, ingången till rock och pop och slutligen sin syn på genusfrågan. Resultaten visar att bakgrunden kan beskrivas som likartat, hälften av intervjupersonerna är multiinstrumentalister och alla har kommit in i pop och rock genom andras uppmuntran men uppger ett stort intresse av rock och pop sedan ungdomen. Majoriteten av de intervjuade har upplevt lite stöd från pedagoger att utforska andra genre än den klassiska. Framförallt de kvinnliga musikerna upplever en sned könsfördelning bland cellister i rock och pop och en allmän sexistisk kvinnosyn i rock och popmusik. (Less)
