Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine school counselors’ constructions of the honor related problems as well as their constructions of their own and the school´s role in relation to these problems. The aim was also to learn about the wider social consequences of the school counselors’ constructions. The purpose of this study was to examine school counselors’ constructions of the honor related problems as well as their constructions of their own and the school´s role in relation to these problems. The aim was also to learn about the wider social consequences of the school counselors’ constructions. I was interested in learning about the meaning and significations the school counselors use in their constructions of the honor related problems, as well as how they speak about different people who could be involved in these problems. The material of the study consists of thematically open interviews with four school counselors who work in Malmö. To analyze the interviews I used Faircloughs critical discourse analysis which is connected to the theory of social constructionism, the general theoretical perspective of this thesis. I have, in the interviews, found an overall way of speaking of the honor related problems which I term the honor discourse. In this honor discourse I have found that the school counselors have different ways of placing their understanding of the honor related problems. The interviews with the school counselors show that their work against the honor related problem should be influenced by work that informs the students about their rights and possibilities as well as strengthens their self image.
