Abstract (Swedish)
This thesis investigates how employment as a concept is used in the discussions about integration policy. With the supposition that employment is regarded as one of the most important factors of integration, it studies the arguments that endorse this supposition in texts on integration policies. Using the discourse theory of Laclau and Mouffe, I discern three different discourses that can explain how employment is used in the arguments in the integration policy. The first, “the right discourse” views employment as a right to immigrants. The second, “the liability discourse” sees employment as a liability of the immigrants. The last one, rarely figured in the texts, is “the safety discourse” which argues that employment among immigrants is needed because unemployment increases the risk of a conflict between immigrants and Swedes. The conclusion is that employment is viewed as both a right and a liability because none of the two main discourses dominate the debate. (Less)
