Abstract
The objective of this paper is to understand the debate around the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 and find a tool to describe it. In connection with the games a great debate occurred around the world: whether the games should be boycotted or not. The reasons for the boycott threat was because of the Chinese attitude towards human rights.
By following the debate in the two bigger Swedish newspapers DN and SVD, the author found patterns in the argumentation. These patterns derived from the material from these sources with help from the analysis apparatus, which is based on ethical valueprinciples asking the questions What?”, How? and Who? These patterns derived from the material from these sources with help from the analysis apparatus, which is based on ethical valueprinciples asking the questions What?”, How? and Who? In terms of moral justification. The foundation of this principle is to detect what value, ethical principle and moral subject that is effected by the argument. The following four argumentation systems were detected, MR-linjen, an argumentation with the focus set on human rights. Olympiska katalysatorn, advocates the positive catalytic effect that the games brings to an area that is hosting the Olympic games. Kollaborationslinjen, enhances the importance of keeping a good dialogue in the international context. The last system is Atletens perspektiv and it campaigns the athletes position and right to participate in the games. (Less)
