- Abstract
- The purpose of this essay is to examine if there is a slow genocide taking place in West Papua. To decide this, the situation of the people of West Papua will be applied on the genocide convention. Other alternative definitions will also be presented to recognize the complexity of the term genocide.
The essay will focus on the violence and use of authority by the Indonesian government, the military and the company Freeport McMoRan. I will use the cases from the tribunals which were created to examine the genocides of Rwanda and Yugoslavia, to understand how to interpret the genocide convention towards the situation of West Papua. To get a greater understanding of the term genocide, Martin Shaw’s book “What is genocide” will be used as an...
