- Abstract
- The idea for this Master’s thesis originated from the author’s curiosity, about digital collection development in Danish research libraries. Is collection development literature, and its tools, currently in use in today’s research library sector and, if not, could it perhaps be of interest for these research libraries, in the long term? These considerations resulted in the author’s work with the collection development domain, theoretically as well as practically, leading to several interesting findings in both domains. As described in chapter 4, some common points of interest exist between the empirical and theoretical domains when it comes to digital collection development, i.e. work-related educational activities, consortium membership,... As described in chapter 4, some common points of interest exist between the empirical and theoretical domains when it comes to digital collection development, i.e. work-related educational activities, consortium membership, digital archiving (retrospective access), user involvement and, most importantly, the “just-in-time” collection development principle. Today’s research libraries, and their constituents, strive to provide their collections in digital form, where possible, and consider the “just-in-time” principle as the essential overall tool to achieve this. However, today’s research libraries, and their staff, for some reason, apparently don’t take the theoretical domain into account. An update of the traditional collection development tools, and/or guidelines, suitable for present and future Danish research libraries’ digital collections therefore seems both advisable, as well as implicitly necessary.
