- Abstract
- The aim of this study was to examine employees at both voluntary and municipal protective shelters, concerning their view upon freedom and control. The study was limited to include young women, who have been exposed to honour-related violence. The questions at issue were: What do the staff members know about the background of these women; How do they work with these women; What norms and values do the staff have; What are the staff’s thoughts on freedom and control. The questions were answered through empirical studies in which we conducted semi-structured interviews, six employees were interviewed. The theoretical logic used in the... (More)

The questions at issue were: What do the staff members know about the background of these women; How do they work with these women; What norms and values do the staff have; What are the staff’s thoughts on freedom and control. The questions were answered through empirical studies in which we conducted semi-structured interviews, six employees were interviewed. The theoretical logic used in the analysis included sociological thoughts about how humans construct their social reality, existentialistic thoughts about individuality, freedom and control and the approach of the employees. Our result showed that the staff exemplified freedom as making your own decisions in life. Control was described as the opposite. Furthermore, our conclusions were that the women were influenced by two surroundings that represented different norms and values. Consequently the women had difficulties to adjust to their communities. At the protective shelters they were re-socialised to adapt to the norms and values represented by the shelters. The staff met the women, who often carried traumatic experiences, with passion and warmth and taught them to be aware of responsibility and consequences. We found that the protective shelters had restrictions in order to protect the women, however the employees were reluctant to admit that their rules also acted as a control measure over the women. Our conclusion was that the staff exercised some control over the women, which became noticeable when the staff explained their sanctions. (Less)
