The need of social assistance has increased dramatically during the 1990s. In large due to the unemployment. A large number of studies have been made which look into how the clients have experienced their contacts with the social services. The results of these studies indicate that social assistance is strongly associated with feelings of shame, guilt and inferiority among the clients. The aim with this essay was to examine how people with social assistance perceive they are being treated by family, relatives, friends and the local community, but also how they perceive they are being portrayed in the media. The method I have chosen to use is a qualitative method with semi-structured interviews in order to collect data. The theory chosen to analyse the results with is the norm theory and I have used concepts like norms, normality, and normalisation. I considered this theory to be interesting because norms are present everywhere and our society is built upon them, but also due to the fact that you differ from any of these basic norms by having social assistance. In my essay I have used previous research studies that have primarily been done in Sweden. My empirical results indicate that the social assistance recipients have received help and support from their families. However, two of the respondents have received negative comments from people near around them about having received social assistance. None of the respondents has experienced any direct prejudices towards them from the local community. Concerning the media, only two of the respondents have expressed something, and this is that they believe not enough is written about social assistance recipients. Although the informants are treated well so do they have a perception of being unsuccessful, have low self-esteem and belonging to a minority. This may be because they feel that they deviate from society´s norms. Something that has come out of this study is the prejudices that social assistance recipients have against other persons in similar situations.
