Abstract
Our purpose was to examine the view and perspectives of the residential staff about the disabled individual’s sexuality. Our study was executed in three different group homes.
Three questions evolved in our process and quest for insight: How does the residential staff construct the disabled sexuality in a group home? What is the staff´s perception of the disabled responsibility concerning their sexuality? Are there any difficulties in the staff´s work with the disabled and their sexuality?
Our questions were answered through three qualitative semistructured group-interviews and one individual interview. The empirical data was analyzed through the theoretical lens of social construction of sexuality, sexual script... (More)

The empirical data was analyzed through the theoretical lens of social construction of sexuality, sexual script and a principle of normality.
The study concludes that personal views and attitudes of staff contribute to the social construction and sexual script of the disabled sexuality. In some cases you could assert that this could lead to a internalization of negatives values and asexuality.
Concerning the disabled responsibility about their sexuality you could see a difference between the male and female social construction of sexuality. The female was the target for projected values, such as caring, responsible and in need for sexual orientation and contraceptive methods. The male on the other hand was being considered, viewed and treated as a less responsible sexual individual, and with a need of sexual expression as an activity with none or a more childish relation to contraceptives.
The staff faced many dimensions of challenges in their work with the disabled sexuality: There was the contradictive relation between promoting sexuality as “normal” who left the disabled with anxiety and avoidance from intimacy and sexual activity because he or she felt that they lacked resources in aspects to the “normal” performance. Or with the option of encouraging to a sexuality adjusted to the disabled who could lead to sexual marginalization of the individual when the staff interpreted the individuals will and need in a wrong way. The staff also experienced difficulties in explaining limitations, such as social codes like “when” and “where” of the sexual expression. Other challenges were the lack of experience and education among some proportions of the staff regarding the aspect of educate and supervise sexuality. (Less)
