Abstract
The role of the artist is influenced by the development of society and is understood in its context hereby. My interest is to study tendencies as they reveal themselves in various ways, in the expressions by different actors in the art education, art community and art fields. I have focused on phenomena as they attend in art education, the art community and art fields in the society. Some conceptions of the artist role tend to be reproduced, so as the idea of the genius artist and has even ancient origin while others are new and marked by its contemporary time. As a theory basis I have used Michel Foucault and his ideas of how different forces in society argue for precedence and create a variation of discourses but also Pierre Bourdieu and his theories of social codes and here used as an instrument to understand interactions by actors in different parts of the art field. The appearance of the postmodern artist in the guise of “bricoleur”, entrepreneur and mediator on the contemporary art scene reveal influences from sciences and economic fields. The theory of Pierre Bourdieu concerning economic values dominating over cultural values is to be found in the actions undertaken by the government and its cultural politics in the art field, as well on national as regional level, and points on an instrumental use of the artist in society but also causing a possible weakening of the artist role.
