Abstract
Material- and Energy efficiency is necessary for the creation of a sustainable society. Based on an assumed need for sustainable design to be more cost efficient in highly cost conscious markets, such as in China, this thesis rapport presents a working model for implementation of sustainable alternatives to traditional measures. Focus is laid on potentiating not only from an environmental perspective but also from a cost perspective. Shanghai is a fairly young city, where a booming economy has made it possible for a previously empty land area of 570 square metres to be filled with sky scrapers, over 16 000 enterprises and over 3 million inhabitants - in 17 years. The need for more space seems never-ending, but the city also has culturally valuable buildings and areas that need to be preserved. China has some of the most polluted cities in the world, and it is important to use sustainable thinking in all businesses. Architects and designers have a great responsibility, and possibility to create surroundings that encourages environmentally friendly life styles. When working with interior design in China, tight time schedules and budgets are very common. By dividing common interior design-problems in categories and implement sustainable ideas is each of them; the whole design gets more environmentally friendly. It is quick and easy, and gives the designer the power to choose all or some green measures, dependant of the client, the case and the budget. (Less)
