Abstract
This thesis is based on our Bachelor thesis in which we found that the costs and the quality of schooling in Ghana are the two major constraints to educating the rural poor. We have done a case study of a subsistence farming community in Ghana. The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the suitability of the goal of Education for All in a rural community. To fulfil this purpose we map the direct, indirect and opportunity costs of schooling in the selected community and investigate the quality of schooling. Further, we also consider the rural-urban bias. This study is done through interviews with households, teachers and children as well as officials in Ghana. Further, relevant literature is reviewed. Further, we also consider the rural-urban bias. This study is done through interviews with households, teachers and children as well as officials in Ghana. Further, relevant literature is reviewed. The major finding is that it may not be completely rational to invest in education in the selected community, given the specific socio-economic setting. We find the total costs for a household to be substantial since the average size of households is high and the quality of schooling is rather low. The rural urban bias is obvious in many areas.
