Department of Informatics
Abstract
Lean manufacturing is one of the optimal ways in producing goods through the removal of waste and implementing logistics flow, it has been widely adopted and into attracted after 21th century by more and more manufacturing companies. Whereas, for the current available information systems in the market like the most widely adopted ERP systems, they are not able to support the operations in the Lean manufacturing environment. Thus, there is a requirement to establish a kind of information system to meet those activities for Lean manufacturing especially in dealing with corporate logistics in Lean environment, business processes, and supporting manufacturing system. Thus, there is a requirement to establish a kind of information system to meet those activities for Lean manufacturing especially in dealing with corporate logistics in Lean environment, business processes, and supporting manufacturing system. This thesis made a proposition for how information system can be involved in Lean Management particularly for manufacturing industry, what detail characteristics shall be required. The author has structured those most important facts by the analysis result of an empirical case study: The key concepts have been drawn from an extensive literature review in both Lean manufacturing and Information systems; The case study took place in a local leading Lean company, focused on the practical solution/cause for avoid/create conflicts/issues to implement Lean manufacturing. The work aims at describing the characteristics of Lean Manufacturing Information Systems and the author finalized 13 characteristics by grouped them into three categorizations from information systems perspective. Not only the result of this thesis has addressed these thirteen characteristics which should be fulfilled for a Lean management system, but also the outcome of this paper covers the consensus on exactly what a Lean Management System is, if a Lean manufacturing information system needs to be developed.
