- Abstract
- This thesis deals with female labour force participation in South Korea over a longer period, 1960s-2004. It focuses on demand and supply factors that may explain the slow growth of the female labour force participation rate despite the significant GDP growth over the given time frame. The demand factors brought up in this thesis are economic growth, gender discrimination in the labour market and the supply factors are fertility rate, child care facilities and pension systems. The data from this thesis shows that gender discrimination in the labour market and the lack of child care facilities and pension systems are major factors to the slow growth in the female labour force participation. - This thesis deals with female labour force participation in South Korea over a longer period, 1960s-2004. In addition, there are still prevalent social norms and values that keep Korean women from prolonging their work duration.
