Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
Self-care; how you take care of yourself in everyday life, in challenging situations, in a long-term as well as in a self-image perspective, was studied in regards to female students at health profession educations at Lund University. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used in the study. A sample of 123 women responded to a questionnaire regarding self-care designed for the purpose of the study, which showed that the women had a relatively high level of self-care. Furthermore, interviews were conducted with those of the women in the group who had the highest (n = 6) and the lowest (n = 4) level of self-care. The collected data was then analysed with factor analysis (N = 123) and thematic analysis (n = 10). The themes that were... (More)

The collected data was then analysed with factor analysis (N = 123) and thematic analysis (n = 10). The themes that were identified as being of importance for self-care were; self-esteem, physical care, endeavour, self-regulation, me-time and social time as well as self-destructive behaviour. What seemed to be obstructing a high level of self-care were setting high standards for one’s self, difficulties saying no, a strict attitude towards one’s self and an insufficient prioritizing of one’s own well-being. What appeared to be promoting a high level of self-care were good social relations, liking one’s self and pleasure. A high level of self-care seems to be more concerned with performing a higher number of positive activities, rather than performing less negative ones. Furthermore, a statistically significant negative correlation between self-care and alexithymia, as measured with TAS-20 (Toronto Alexithymia Scale), was found (r = -0,517, p = 0,000). In other words, a higher level of self-care co-varied with a lower level of alexithymia in this study. (Less)
