Abstract
This Master Thesis was carried out at EuroMaint Rail AB in Malmoe.
The assignment, which was provided by EuroMaint Rail AB, was to develop a device
that makes the workload easier and enhances the safety in the engine replacement
process for the locomotives RC1-4. Since the company at a national level started to
introduce LEAN-production, management at the repair shop in Malmoe, Sweden,
searched for a way to reduce lead times related to the engine replacement process.
To find out and clarify the demands and wishes that could exist for the new design a

To find out and clarify the demands and wishes that could exist for the new design a
background study was conducted. In this study competitors were examined, visits at
other repair shops was done, a Value Stream Mapping of the engine replacement
process was carried through and meetings and conversations with the repairmen took
place.
Ideas and concepts were created by means of brainstorming. The various concepts
were then evaluated with a function analysis that was based on the previous demands.
A winning concept emerged which was further developed into a simple and functional
concept.
The final concept may be viewed as an optimized solution, which, after simple modifications
and additional changes within the company, meets almost all of the demands
on it. If a successful implementation of the design concept takes place the work with
the engine replacement could be shortened by up to one hour and forty-eight minutes. (Less)
