Abstract
This report has arisen due to lack of fire protection in the upper secondary school Västerhöjdgymnasiet in Skövde, Sweden. The report analyzes demands on personal safety when evacuating the building based on applicable laws and regulations; no emphasis has been taken regarding economic losses.
The goal is to achieve a satisfactory evacuation in case of fire. The chosen acceptance criterion is that there must be a satisfactory evacuation in at least 99% of the cases when fire occurs. The report shows that fire protection in the current situation is unsatisfactory and that the acceptance criterion is by far not met in several parts of the building. Cost-effective proposals for action are studied in order to achieve this goal.

The method used is based on qualitative reasoning and quantitative estimates of safety margins for different scenarios. The safety margin describes the difference between available evacuation time or time to critical conditions and the actual evacuation time. The uncertainties surrounding these periods are treated individually for each scenario.
