- The purpose of this thesis is to examine the changes that the Circusfactions underwent in the fifth and sixth centuries A.D and what underlying factors contributed to it. Basically, the intention with this thesis is to investigate how the circusfactions come to advance from mere cheering-associations, with a single interest, horseracing and the games, to a state employed claque with crucial civic responsibilities, not only in association with the games.
After the late fifth and sixth century they had acquired the role as the emperors’ personal claque and played an important role as the official announcers of a new emperor as well as defenders of cities, builders of walls and instigators of riots.
