The aim of this study is to shed more light on the following question: Are there important areas of study which are significant when working with questions of interpretation in classical music, areas which are usually not given enough priority in today’s music teaching? Interpretation includes different aesthetic choices, which means that certain ways of interpreting are preferred compared to others. For this reason there is a discussion of the term musical quality and its different meanings. Subsequently, the question of whether or not more theoretical knowledge is necessary in order to achieve greater skill in musical interpretation is discussed. Another area for the discourse is to see if spoken language in any way can be used as a point of reference and help in the process of interpretation, and to find out what is written about the connection between spoken language and music from this point of view. The empirical part of the paper investigates the methods used by a number of teachers at the Malmoe Academy of Music when working with musical interpretation. The result indicates that there does not seem to be any common agreement or any single specific system for the interpretation of classical music. (Less)
