The purpose with this study was to explore how professionals in social work reflect on learning-disabled parental capacity from a child- and parent perspective. We have investigated two different units within the same type of organization to see if there are any differences in their approaches. We have also investigated if the professionals room for manoeuvre has influenced their judgements concerning learning-disabled parental capacity. To reach our purpose with this assignment we did structured interviews with six social workers who where working at social welfare service, three social workers from the disability unit and three from child- and youth unit. We choose these departments because these are the two units within social welfare services who comes in contact with learning-disabled parents. Through our investigation we found that both units gave the learning-disabled parents bad grades in their capacity to raise and take care of their child. Both units declared that they had the possibility to support learning-disabled parental capacity with help from different interventions. The child- and youth unit could provide interventions to children and the disability unit could provide interventions to the learning-disabled parent. The investigation also revealed that social workers from the child- and youth unit made their assessments on learning-disabled parents from the child perspective. The social workers from the disability unit instead made their assessments from a parent perspective when they were working with learning-disabled parents and they made no judgment in the parent capacity. We saw that they took these perspectives because they in these units were guided by different laws. The room for manoeuvre for these social workers was large and affected their assessments of learning-disabled capacity. Through our investigation we found out that the social workers room for manoeuvre were influenced by their own experiences and their work was done with little observation and control. (Less)
