Acting on a global scale introduces a new complexity when it comes to running a business successfully. Purpose: To describe and explain Alfa Laval’s current manufacturing strategy, process for rollout planning and the aspects that affect choice of manufacturing strategy for new products. In addition the purpose is to suggest an approach for developing a rollout plan and selecting suitable manufacturing strategies for new products by developing a tool to support the approach. The tool is to be suited for Alfa Laval’s continuous work with rollout planning of new products.
Method: The work of concluding this master thesis can roughly be divided into three main phases. First a comprehensive study was conducted to understand how Alfa Laval works and what aspects
affect rollout planning. Secondly the situation was analysed, and finally a tool was developed to improve Alfa Laval’s rollout planning.
Conclusion: The developed rollout planning tool helps improve the approach to rollout planning by the compilation of all relevant data in an easy to use and visualizing way. Furthermore it aims to reconcile manufacturing and marketing strategy. For Alfa Laval to be able to match market requirements with site performances, it is necessary to change the basic work procedure of how markets are studied and gain a solid picture of the market demand in clearly defined regions.
To complement the rollout planning tool and its suggested method, a number of changes to the work procedure and process are recommended. Our suggestion is to introduce an additional rollout planning activity, which displays the variable nature of making a rollout plan. Another aspect of this is also to include the different departments into the process map, visualizing feedback and information between departments when working with the rollout plan.
With the help of the tool, the aim is to increase the decision quality when planning the rollout plan. The main benefits of the tool are its ability to collect and display a wide variety of information associated to the rollout and create easily comparable alternatives. (Less)
