Abstract
This master thesis has been performed at Kockums AB, where the elements of the
process of placing cables have been studied in find ways to develop the work procedure.
The purpose of the master thesis is to investigate the process of placing cables at naval
ships and identify elements that can be developed to make the process more effective
and to present proposals for development of the process.
In the master thesis the process of placing cables in the production of Surface vessels
has been surveyed, and thereafter examined in order to clarify what measures are

In the master thesis the process of placing cables in the production of Surface vessels
has been surveyed, and thereafter examined in order to clarify what measures are
possible to implement. Initial ideas of improving the process within Kockums have been
evaluated and own ideas and areas of improvement have been developed. In order to
base the conclusions on a theoretic foundation, studies of relevant literature have been
conducted.
During the development of the master thesis it has been clarified that the primary
element to increase the efficiency is to decrease the volume of material in the
warehouse. A proposal to perform this has been developed together with a producer of
cables; Habia Cable and a distributor; Selga. The proposal is based upon that Kockums
will outsource its stock of cables to Selga. The outsourcing also includes an element of
the production; the cutting of cables, and may also include outsourcing of the marking
of cables..
A hypothetical project has been used to calculate the economical consequences of an
outsourcing. The calculations indicates a saving of 9,8 MSEK during a period of ten
years, when the calculations includes outsourcing of both production-elements. A
remark is that the calculations are restrictive, and the actual savings should be greater.
An outsourcing of the stock also means that capacity will be set free, both in the
warehouse and in the production.
Kockums utilizes similar methods for purchasing and storing components for a number
of other details used for the production of naval ships. This makes the work procedure
developed in the master thesis applicable for further details. In the production of
submarines the same methods for purchasing and storage are also used, and this makes
it possible to implement the work procedures to increase effectiveness also in this area. (Less)
