work, specifically in areas such as logistics and transport. Activities, that used to
be managed within the company business model, are being outsourced to third
parties to achieve flexibility and more efficient cost management systems. In
today’s boundless trade it is made possible even for small and middle size
companies to target customers all over the globe, which is being expressed by
many organisations in their outspoken vision.
DHL, one of largest express and logistics companies in the world, has due to
mergers and acquisitions expanded vigorously over the past decade. The
company’s continues work to adapt the organisation to ever changing
environmental circumstances is a complex and demanding task.
The Storage business unit, which can be found in the Logistics division under
the Freight business area, is not an exception from the logistics market rapid
expansion. This master thesis is considered with the Storage business unit
environment and other business activities. Is today’s constellation of resources
and competences appropriate for further organisational expansion? Is the
Storage organisational structure fit for the task? Can Storage draw benefits from
organisational learning? These are just some of the questions posed by the
Storage management that needs to be further investigated and evaluated.
Purpose The main purpose of this essay is, based on interpreted collected data, to identify
the DHL Storage’s strategic position, its unique resources, its core competences
and critical success factors. The purpose is furthermore, supported by obtained
insights, to pinpoint activities/processes and/or functions within Storage that
could be of importance for the future management of the business unit. This
explorative investigation is being performed under the assumption that Storage’s
benign growth will continue. The growth is forecasted thru extrapolation of the
revenue and EBITA over the past three years.
Delimitation The essay focuses entirely on identifying DHL Storage’s strategic position, and
pinpoint activities/processes and/or functions within the business unit that can
be considered to be of specific importance. The work does not provide a detailed
constellation of the unit’s resources and competences, neither does it precise any
specific solutions for different problem areas. The task is to objectively estimate
and identify key factors in the DHL Storage environment.
Method The inquiry is explorative and in line with its investigative nature a crosssection,
survey, approach was conducted. Three main methods were used for
collecting the necessary primary data: personal interviews, observations and
questionnaires. The different methods complement each other, thru
triangulation, and they produce information that altogether represents a credible
database. Secondary data as, newspapers, intranet, internal presentations etc.
have also been widely used. For the analysis deductive methods SWOT, revenue
and growth analysis was used as well as the inductive method Smooth.
Interpreted and analysed information provide the base for the discussion and
conclusion.
Conclusion As of today Storage is generally speaking a healthy business unit with a steady
continuous profitable growth. The overall competence is high, with core
competences in areas such as storing and management of garments, business
development and production, and the unit have unique resources such as skilled
personal, specialised garments storages, strategic external alliance partners and
DHL:s network at one’s disposal.
The tailor made service provided by Storage is one of very high quality and the
competitive benefits are numerous. But there are also more or less obvious
challenges that lie ahead of the business unit. Within the near future a greater
effort in areas in and around the main cities, Stockholm, Gothenburg and
Malmoe, will probably be inevitable, unless the competitors are to get a
significant advantage on a strategically important market. Internally there are
areas that call for immediate attention and a more thorough investigation in
order to achieve a higher efficiency in the management and coordination of
activities. Among the functions and processes/activities that according to this
study show signs of being specifically important are: customer relationship
(establish a standardised procedure for customer relationship management), IT
structure (develop and reinforce), standardised basic service (for small and
medium size customers), Nycelogic (expanded use), and finally to prepare the
organisation for future competence loss. (Less)
