Abstract
Background Presona AB manufactures fully automatic balers and
compactors for waste management. A simple and clear supply
chain is wanted. High inventory costs and long lead time have
been identified; the long lead time partly is due to insufficient
supplier processes. The company is not satisfied with the
stock turnover. The communication with the suppliers today is
handled by fax which is time demanding, Presona is
considering implementing e-mail as a communication system.

Purpose and aim The purpose of this master thesis is to investigate the
possibilities to reduce the stock level, raise the stock turnover,
lower the material handling, and simplify the administrative
efforts. The purpose is also to lay ground to easier supplier
processes between Presona and their suppliers. The aim of the
master thesis is to provide Presona suggestions for
improvement of the supply chain.
Empirical results Presona has unsatisfied internal communication. There is lack
of control regarding whether the components are intended for
the production department or for the service department and
therefore conflicts arise between the departments. This
complexity has resulted in high inventory level and high
inventory costs. The company has reached agreement with
some of their suppliers; the suppliers keep components of
Presona in stock, hence has Presona been able to lower their
inventory level.
Recommendations One recommendation to Presona is to separate the inventory
between the service department and the production
department. The stock level of the service department should
be well defined with right articles in right quantities. The
production department should not have their articles in stock
while the articles should be ordered and they should arrive
specific by project. A development of relations with the
suppliers is necessary in order to improve the total supply
chain. The changes suggested will increase the requirements
on the suppliers. The internal communication at Presona needs
to be improved; there must be a feeling of responsibility in
every part of the company. The conditions must be sufficient
so that the production planning can be carried out at an earlier
stage and contribute to a smoother flow in the supply chain.
Customer focus is important but the company must also have
a holistic view. (Less)
