Abstract (Swedish)
The purpose of the present study was to increase knowledge about social anxiety within a population that previous research has largely ignored even though it has been showed that difficulties often arise in this period, namely adolescence; by looking upon how frequently occurring it is, to see which symptoms are most commonly experienced and to see if and how social anxiety relates to diverse psychosocial variables, such as interpersonal relationships and global self-esteem. 99 adolescents (aged 14-16), from two Swedish schools, participated by filling out a questionnaire. The central instruments included in this questionnaire were the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale and the Social Phobia Scale. The results showed that the frequency of social anxiety in adolescence corresponded to estimated figures for the adult population in Sweden. It also became apparent that, generally, adolescents experience more
social anxiety in social interactions than context specific social anxiety. Social anxiety was also shown to exist in a complex system, correlating with psychosocial variables included in the study. These results can be useful in future research of causality and in the development of effective interventional methods to inhibit and prevent the risk of developing the clinical diagnosis social phobia in the future.
