Abstract (Swedish)
Through discourse analysis I investigate how the Swedish liberal party, Folkpartiet, constructs two opposing identities in their discourse of alienation (in Swedish utanförskap). I draw from Torben Bech Dyrbergs theory on how identities are constructed through the logics of difference and equivalence (1997). Laclau and Mouffe are the main inspirations for analyzing the organization of the discourse (2008). My main conclusions are that two identities are constructed. The first is called the identity of alienation which is given meaning by being linked to an equivalence chain of unemployment, dependence on state aid, powerlessness, immigrants, the suburb and criminality. The second is the identity of the communal society which is constructed... (More)

The first is called the identity of alienation which is given meaning by being linked to an equivalence chain of unemployment, dependence on state aid, powerlessness, immigrants, the suburb and criminality. The second is the identity of the communal society which is constructed as an opposing identity to the one of alienation. The identity of the communal society is given meaning through the equivalence chain of employment, social mobility, empowerment, to own ones housing, the understanding of the Swedish culture and to be a Swedish native. This identity seems taken for granted and I understand it as an expression of a hegemonic structure in Folkpartiet’s discourse. (Less)
