Abstract
This thesis tries to analyse the effects that the Lisbon treaty will have on the legislative influence of the European Parliament. Contrary from other studies in this field, this thesis focuses on how a stronger EP would change EU-legislation. By using a rational-choice approach and a specially designed research model, the EP’s impact is examined. To ensure that informal procedures are included in the study, newly conducted interviews with people from the different institutions as well as scientific literature are used as research material.
The research model consists of two parts. In the first segment, the Lisbon treaty is the object of research. It is analysed as a document that sets the rules of how the EU institutions should interact,... (More)
This thesis tries to analyse the effects that the Lisbon treaty will have on the legislative influence of the European Parliament.
It is analysed as a document that sets the rules of how the EU institutions should interact, but also the more informal rules, which are likely to result from it, are taken into consideration. In the second part, the EP’s organization, behaviour and opinions are in focus. This is analysed both from a general point of view and by looking at specific cases.
The thesis concludes that EP’s possibility to effect EU legislation has increased significantly since the Lisbon treaty came into force, especially due to the informal procedures. It is likely that this will mean that EU legislation will be more open for closer EU integration and that less consideration to national interests will be taken. (Less)
