- Abstract (Swedish)
- In recent years there has been an intensive discussion about how Sweden should be organized in the future. At the turn of 2010/2011six Halland communes formed Region Halland.
In this thesis the changes of the Swedish state space are studied through a theoretical approach which focuses on the spatial selectivity. By the concept of spatial selectivity the political-economic aspects of spatial change may be analyzed. Spatial selectivity results from the relational interplay between the geographies of inherited state structures and emergent strategies to transform and/or instrumentalize the geographies of state power. The core of the analysis is to understand the actors' in relation to the structural environment.

But how did this process led to the formation of Region Halland? What political and economic processes lie behind?
I conclude that the economic crisis during the 1990´s, together with the Swedish EU membership, had a deep impact on the reformulated Swedish regional policy in the late 1990's. This in turn led Sweden to decentralize the regional level. As crucial for the part of Region Halland, was it that Kungsbacka commune never came to be incorporated in a western Swedish region, though it looked as a likely possibility for a while. (Less)
