- Title: To sing without limitations, interviews with three singing teachers talking about their experiences about what it means to work with mental and physical blockages.
The purpose of this study is to obtain new knowledge about how vocal coaches work with students’ mental and physical blockages. The study examines how vocal coaches perceive their responsibility towards their students and how they seperate their professional field of art and education from medical care and therapy. The study is based on qualitative interviews with three singing-teachers and their experience from working with mental blocks. The purpose of this study is to obtain new knowledge about how vocal coaches work with students’ mental and physical blockages. The study examines how vocal coaches perceive their responsibility towards their students and how they seperate their professional field of art and education from medical care and therapy. The study is based on qualitative interviews with three singing-teachers and their experience from working with mental blocks. All informants have training within classical vocal technique and they are also professional singers. The results of the interviews show that all informants have daily encounters with students who suffer from mental and physical obstructions. The singing-teachers emphasize that a safe and relaxed working environment is of great importance to singing-teaching. All informants stress the importance of knowing the limit of their expertise, and when to let professionals with proper training give treatment to the student if this is required. The results also indicates that students need a certain degree of emotional maturity to make the teachers’ work with
