Distributionen av kadmium i moränmark kring St. Olof, SÖ Skåne

- Abstract
- High concentrations of cadmium have been found in soils, groundwater and vegetation around the village of St. Olof, SE Scania, southern Sweden. Variations in the cadmium concentrations are interpreted as influenced by local geology. A thin basal melt-out till dominated by local bedrock covers the area. Three sites were sampled and the till was analysed regarding pH, organic carbon, grain size distribution, lithological composition and concentrations of base cations, cadmium and zinc. Surface enrichment of cadmium in the soil profiles indicates that atmospheric deposition of cadmium is contributing to the till concentrations. Increasing cadmium concentrations with depth in one of the soil profiles indicates a cadmium source in the... (More)

Increasing cadmium concentrations with depth in one of the soil profiles indicates a cadmium source in the geological material. The lithological composition of the till seems to be of major importance to the cadmium content of the coarser material, whereas adsorption is an important mechanism influencing the cadmium content of the fine grain material. Alum shale fragments in the till was found to contain about ten times higher cadmium concentrations than fragments of other rock types. Indications of cadmium and zinc co-varying in fine grain material as well as in the different rock types in the till lead to the conclusion that one geological source could be causing the high concentrations of these elements. (More)
