Abstract (Swedish)
The interventions of the Turkish military in Turkish politics have been many and severe. As a consequence the development of a Turkish democracy has been backtracked and halted on occasions. The country’s aspirations for EU-membership have also been hindered. At the center of political (re)development in Turkish politics we find the constitution of 1982. This study will examine and show what changes the constitution of 1982 has undergone between 1997 and 2010.
With the intent to try and explain the changes during this period I use an agency perspective theory to find the motives behind constitutional reformation.
Turkey has during the later years been through westernization. Democracy and elevation of political rights and freedoms has been a large part of this. The military that has always been a large part of Turkish reformation earlier did stand behind these changes initially. But this might have change. The political autonomy they have been enjoying is diminishing. A new relationship between the civil state and its military is emerging – And a new political atmosphere with it. (Less)
