Abstract
Within the past years the prehospital care has been vividly debated in the media. Foremost the level of competence among the paramedics has been disputed. The aim of this study was to receive information about how the paramedics feel about their trade. Data was collected through literary study and interviews with five paramedics. The interviews were analysed using a hermeneutic-phenomenologically-inspired method. The results are given as a summing up of thoughts and experiences reported in the interviews. An important result of the study is the uncertainty the paramedics feel about their occupational group. They also experience much pressure from the society and from the ambulance principal. The paramedics are content with their work but sometimes, in certain situations involving critically ill or children, feel that they are insufficient and powerless. Therefor, regular debriefings are important, just as open-ness and flexibility between staff members. Due to previous attitudes suggesting that paramedics should not cry or show emotions, the openness is a problem. The paramedics feel competent and do not experience any problem with their training. I draw the conclusion from this study that a co-operation between nurses, physicians and paramedics in the prehospital care is necessary. Otherwise the quality of pre-hospital care will decay. (Less)
