The study was designed with snowball sampling using semi-structured interviews. The method for analysis was qualitative description. Twelve paramedical health workers from a Non Governmental Organisation as well as from Public Health Care were included. The participants expressed their beliefs about street children's ill health as caused by social factors. Street children's access to Public Health Care was expressed as being the same as other Ugandans, though not designed to meet the particular health needs of street children. The description of how health care for street children should be carried out was differentiated, although all participants described that the best would be to eliminate the occurrence of street children. The results show that cooperation between Non Governmental Organisations and Public Health Care is a way to strengthen health care for street children. The applicability of self-care theories on street children in eastern Uganda is discussed, but further research is needed to fully confirm their applicability. (Less)
