- Abstract
- Problem discussion - Volvo trucks belive that their high number of coilsvariants is one of the reasons they have high costs for inventory and suffer from lack of space. Slitting is the first manufacturing process for some of the steel coils. It means dividing the coils into a number of narrower rolls. Scrap occurs in the slittingprocess and Volvo trucks would like to reduce the amount of scrap. The question of this thesis is how to reduce; the number of coils, the amount scrap, and the lack of space.
Purpose/Objective - The purpose of this thesis was to give a recomendation of how Volvo trucks could reduce; the number of coils, the amount scrap, and the lack of space.

Purpose/Objective - The purpose of this thesis was to give a recomendation of how Volvo trucks could reduce; the number of coils, the amount scrap, and the lack of space.
Methodology - The thesis is situation at VLU today is mapped. The ambition is predictive since the purpose was to give a recommendation how Volvo trucks could reduce their costs related to raw material. To evaluate the consequences of different approaches was a simulation model created. Through an inductive approach has the thesis lead to a method of coils optimization.
Conclusions/Recommendations – The analysis shows that there exists a great potential to reduce costs through coilsoptimization, witout any large investment. The optimization method in this report is helpful to reduce the number of coils variants. Fewer variants would give cost reductions through simplified administration and logistics of the coils. There are also potential to reduce the amount of scrap by calculate the coilswidth using a model based on the Cutting Stock Problem. The optimization method presented in this thesis would decrease the inventory levels of coils, but not the levels of secondary rolls from slitting. (Less)
