- Local parties are a powerful political factor in many Swedish municipalities but haven't gained as much attention as new parties on the national level. In this essay we try to create an understanding of why inhabitants of these municipalities give electoral support to these local parties. Rather than focusing on new political cleavages or institutional changes, the theory by Lawson & Merkl we are using, tries to locate the success of new political parties in the mistakes and failed linkage of the established parties.
The theory has mostly been applied on parties on a national level but we believe it may be able to explain success of local parties.
