Abstract
The aim of this study was to describe how teenagers of siblings with ADHD experience and cope with their lives in relation to their mental health. Four girls and two boys aged 13-18 years participated in the study. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and two assessment forms: the Beck Youth Scales and Coping Inventory Resources. Based upon a hermeneutic phenomenological approach, the interview material was analyzed with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Seven main themes were identified in the interviews: siblings 'mental health, siblings' attitude to their life situation (coping), lack of time for their own, living in the shadow of ADHD, not burden busy parents, the dream of a well-balanced life, and being... However, despite the good togetherness in these families, the siblings told that they sometimes felt alone and showed various symptoms of mental illness. The results point to a need for further research in which the mental health of these siblings' are in focus. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
