Styvfamilj i ett tregenerationsperspektiv: Styvmor- och farföräldrars erfarenheter

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to illustrate stepgrandparents´ experiences of their role. The questions asked were which elements do have an influence on how the role as a stepgrandparent is experienced, in which way the role as a stepgrandparent is organized in practice, how stepgrandparents name their role and the process behind that name. The study was based on qualitative interviews with five Swedish stepgrandparents.
It was found that some of the elements influencing the role could be static, for example geographic distance or the age of the stepgrandchildren, while other, such as the relationship to the middle generation, interests, habits and house rules are more open to influence and a personal input to the role.

Conclusions from the study are that many varying elements affect how the individual stepgrandparent models the role. The expectations are indistinct and the choices differ. For the one who chooses to take an active part, the role as a stepgrandparent can offer the possibility of being an important grown up person for a stepgrandchild during her childhood and adolescence in the way that suits the context of the stepgrandchild. Flexibility and sensitivity, especially in relation to the ideas of the middle generation, is a requirement. (Less)
