- Abstract
- The purpose of our study was to examine the effect of cognitive preparation during audio-feedback in a single-session treatment for social anxiety in a non-clinical sample. Participants in the study were recruited among high school students with high self-rated social anxiety. The study was conducted with a between-groups and repeated measure design. In total 41 participants were randomized to an experimental group and a control group. All participants received audio feedback treatment and were asked to give two speeches that were recorded. Participants in the experimental group also received cognitive preparation, i.e. they were instructed to listen to the recording as if they were listening to a stranger. All participants evaluated their... (More)

Participants in the experimental group also received cognitive preparation, i.e. they were instructed to listen to the recording as if they were listening to a stranger. All participants evaluated their performance with respect to how they perceived their voices and their performance was also evaluated by two independent observers. The results of the study showed that the experimental group reported significantly less negative self-evaluation compared to the control group. The results remained significant in the second speech, following a short break, showing a generalization effect. Thus the study showed that cognitive preparation improved the effect of audio-feedback treatment. (Less)
