- Abstract
- Roma people have since their first stay in Sweden endured discrimination and violations due other people’s intolerance of their values, way of living and culture. Some of the most common concepts used to describe the Roma people are as a threat or a problem, as incompetent or incapable and as un-Swedish. These concepts were found in both studies of the Roma people and official governmental investigations. - Roma people have since their first stay in Sweden endured discrimination and violations due other people’s intolerance of their values, way of living and culture. Some of the most common concepts used to describe the Roma people are as a threat or a problem, as incompetent or incapable and as un-Swedish. These concepts were found in both studies of the Roma people and official governmental investigations. The method of understanding concepts within their context is used to examine their change during the 20th century until the present day and also to examine the government’s latest strategy: En samordnad och långsiktig strategi för romers inkludering 2012-2032, in relation to these concepts. Charles Taylor’s theory of identity and recognition is used to better understand how concepts and prejudice affect both minorities and the majority society. The attitude towards the above mentioned concepts has changed from being racist to assimilating and in the end to preserve ethnic boundaries. They can also be found in the governmental strategy which can affect the work plan negatively. (Less)
