Abstract
This study examines nine adolescents’ idiosyncratic experiences of one family therapy session. The treatments took place in the settings of community family treatment centers in northern Stockholm. Adolescents are referred to treatment in these settings for various reasons, mostly due to criminal behavior, drug use or behavioral problems. Some enter treatment due to family relational problems or parental problems (violence, psychiatric diagnosis, drug abuse etc.). These reasons implicate that adolescents rarely enter treatment of their own will. This study examines the impact this fact has on youth’s experiences of alliance with their therapist, and their sense of coherence of the treatment session. The study also examines the adolescent’s observations and thoughts on alliance between parents and therapists. The result of the study implicates that alliances between the youth, the parents and the therapist are interdependent. It also implicates that important alliance factors in the treatment of youths, might differ from alliance factors in the treatment of adults. Since the quality of the therapeutic alliance is proven to be the most robust predictor of treatment success in adult treatment, we suggest that specific alliance factors in treatment with adolescents need further exploration. Limitations of the research and implications of further studies are discussed. (Less)
