The aim of this study was to examine how kosovo albanian adolescents looked upon the general public’s negative picture of Landskrona and how they have handled their reported stigmatization and low status. The aim of this study was to examine how kosovo albanian adolescents looked upon the general public’s negative picture of Landskrona and how they have handled their reported stigmatization and low status. We used qualitative methods in the form of interviews since we considered it to be most suitable to answer our questions. We interviewed six kosovo albanian adolescents between 16 and 21 years old, all of whom were from Landskrona. We then analysed the results of the interviews with the help of labeling theory in combination with social construction theory. The most important conclusion we drew were that all interviewed adolescents agreed that the general public has a negative conception of Landskrona and their immigrants. They were aware that criminality exists in the town but on the other hand they were of the opinion that the general public and above all media exaggerate. All interviewed mentioned that they feel stigmatized because of their nationality. They considered among other things that the general public looks upon all kosovo albanians in Landskrona as thieves and that kosovo albanians from other town accuse them of having destroyed their reputation in the whole country. From the interviews we gathered that the adolescents handle their stigmatization mostly by associating in larger groups by which they feel stronger. Another way to handle the stigmatization according to the interviewed is to lie about their extraction. In spite of all this they still could see a future in Landskrona for them because they all according to them belong in this town. (Less)
