This paper is a study of the meaning and definition behind aesthetic value in contemporary popular music. The material that this paper focuses on consists namely of written essays, published in the daily press, and that are in some way related to the topic, and different takes and views regarding value. These essays will help serve as the base of the discussion in this paper, and to help explain and problematize the expressed viewpoints I have used theories related to culture and value by Theodor Adorno, Pierre Bourdieu and Walter Benjamin, all of whom express different takes on the questions raised in this thesis. The main purpose behind the essay is to emphasize how we value music in our contemporary society, and how the way we consume music in general colours this specific value. One of the questions this paper serves as a way of answering is how the way digital culture has changed the way music is consumed, with a major shift from vinyl and Cds to digital files stored on hard drives, and if this shift says something about the value of music? The terms value and aesthetic are not easy to define, and this is also a factor that needs to be considered in this context.

Keywords: Aesthetic, value, the album format, concept albums, popular music, Adorno, Bourdieu and Benjamin. (Less)
