- Abstract
- This study uses a discursive psychology method to analyse four interviews with parents of non-heterosexual children. The aim of this thesis is to examine how heterosexuality is constructed, and in which manner it is being challenged by the encounter with non-heterosexual family members.
The theoretical basis for the thesis is queer theory, with a specific focus on how the heterosexual matrix and heteronormativity is reflected in the four interviews. This is done by deconstructing the language using discursive psychology to look at three different levels: interpretative repertoires, ideological dilemmas and subject positions. Specifically this thesis focuses on how gender/sex, sexuality/desire, and non-heterosexuality is presented by the informants.
The interpretative repertoires, ideological dilemmas and subject positions that the informants use, reproduce the heterosexual matrix and heteronormativity to some degree. At some points they also challenge the narrative in relation to both themselves and their non-heterosexual children. There are also several examples of parents queering themselves and/or assimilating non-heterosexuality into (hetero)normativity. (Less)
