Prissättningsstrategier vid digital distribution av mjukvara Fallstudie Microsoft points

Stenander, John LU (2012) NEKH01 20121
Department of Economics
Abstract
This paper will study the Microsoft points system used for the Xbox
360 gaming system. The main conclusion from the paper is that three
separate models is needed for the explanation of the system. Consumer
switching costs, commodity bundling and the simpler concept
of transactions costs. None by itself can explain why the system is in
place but they all together provide the explanation. These three models
will make it plausible that the system is in place for the reduction
of transaction costs but that it is actively used to exploit monopoly
power and distinguish between consumers and lock them in a favorable
behavior.
