Abstract
Title: Comparison of certification criteria and simulation methods for assessment of daylight conditions - applied in a Swedish passive house Authors: Emma Boberg and Anna Savolainen, Civil Engineering specializing in Architecture at the Faculty of Engineering Lund University, LTH. Supervisors: Helena Bülow-Hübe, Environment and Energy Manager, Ph.D, FOJAB Architects. Staffan Premmert, Architect, Sweco. Issue/Problem: What is the significance of daylight for people’s health? How important are various residential options? How big is the difference between different simulation programs and their results?

How important are various residential options? How big is the difference between different simulation programs and their results?
What is the difference between various environmental certification systems? Purpose: The purpose is to study whether there is sufficient natural light in a residential building and to see how much the daylight criteria differentiate between three environmental classification systems. We will also compare the results of three simulation programs. Method: literature studies, interviews, daylight measurement, survey, simulation, analysis/comparison, conclusion. Conclusions: Skylights let in three times the amount of light compared to a façade window; the disadvantage is that it is similar to artificial light. Increased reflectance of the surface layers will bring in natural light further into the room. It it also recommended to remove obstacles such as partitions and balconies to lighten up the room. Daysim is complicated and does not work in daylight calculation of large buildings. In Velux Daylight Visualizer you can perform educational and life-like simulations of daylighting in a room, but you cannot perform correct daylight calculations. Autodesk 3ds Max Design works well in the calculation of large areas and renders images that can be used when applying for the environmental classification. Counting by hand using the book Räkna med dagsljus is outdated, time-consuming and not to be recommended. Comparison of results from the various programs shows that they do not vary much. However, it may be significant if a building is approved or not in the application of environmental classification. All building rating tools get results after interpretation of environmental classification criteria, standards and regulations.
When calculating the daylight in BREEAM and LEED you use different grid sizes and calculate a mean value. In Miljöbyggnad you compare two points in a room. (Less)
