Abstract
Nowadays, Tunisian cities are growing uncontrollably, new neighborhoods are being built and renovated without the slight consideration to energy usage. Housing shortage and the economic situation are some factors that impose an uncontrolled urban development. The Tunisian architectural history goes long back in time, in addition to Tunisia’s streets’ Arabic architectural culture being inspired by European architecture. Over time, the European way of thinking has taken over at the cost of the traditional urban planning. This resulted in the creation of areas whose design doesn’t fit into Tunisia’s climate. This, in its turn, causes unnecessary energy consumption. There are several steps that lead to a comfortable urban environment. By selecting the correct area for a city plan, orientation of the buildings, creation of shading and the use of wind for ventilation, we can achieve a pleasant urban environment and reduce energy use. In this report we have studied an urban planning project that was conducted by the Tunisian students. Their task was to create a comfortable urban design for an area called Bouficha-Salloum. We studied their report to develop recommendations to improve this plan. The students had a well-designed city plan; however, it could be further adapted for the climate of Tunis. It was clear that European urban planning inspired them. The actions we choose, take into account the results from Givoni and Mahoney tables. We also take into account the need for parks and shaded streets. We have reached the following recommendations for the area of Bouficha-Salloum:
• Inspired by the traditional construction
• Less distance between buildings
• Create elevation differences in the area
• Bright buildings
• Use of sun protection
• Use rectangular buildings and reduce sun load to the longitudinal sides
• Use of solar cells if they are available (Less)
