- Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less) - Abstract
- Urbanization is a major driver of land-use change but the urban sprawl can be decreased by the densification of cities. On the other hand densification poses a threat to the urban green spaces; areas that have a high delivery of ecosystem services are essential to a high-quality living environment. The aim of this thesis is to illuminate the benefits of urban green space to raise their importance in the urban planning of the municipality of Lund in Sweden. The aim was fulfilled by quantifying the above ground carbon storage trough a field survey of the city’s vegetation and by quantifying the biofuel production trough telephone interviews with local producers of garden and park waste. Furthermore, the potential of adding value to urban green space by increasing the biofuel production was investigated.
The results show that the urban green spaces in Lund delivers a range of ecosystem services which can be divided into four categories: provisioning services, regulating services, supporting services and cultural services. The urban vegetation stores about 52550 tons of carbon which is equal to 19 tons per hectare or 2.3 tons of carbon dioxide per citizen. Furthermore the urban green space produces 66400 m3 garden and park waste every year which can be used for biofuel production. About 37300 m3 of the waste is woody material and the rest is other organic material. Moreover, the results show that the value of urban green space can be raised by an increase in biofuel production. If the vegetation is converted in a suitable way improved conditions for biodiversity, storm water management, carbon storage and possibly also recreation can be obtained. At the moment it is not economically feasible to increase the urban production of biofuels, but this might change as the demand for renewable energy is rising. (Less)
