- Abstract
- Kockums is a leading company that develops military marine systems, for use both below and above the water surface [1]. Future submarines have a need to be operated more accurate than today’s submarines to perform various types of new operations. Therefore, on behalf of the conceptual design department on Kockums, a maneuvering system was to be developed to operate a submarine more accurate at low speeds and to assist as an emergency propulsion unit. The development of the maneuvering system was based on Systems Engineering methodology including:
-Planning

-Concept synthesis

Therefore, on behalf of the conceptual design department on Kockums, a maneuvering system was to be developed to operate a submarine more accurate at low speeds and to assist as an emergency propulsion unit. The development of the maneuvering system was based on Systems Engineering methodology including:
-Planning
-Requirements analysis
-Functional analysis
-Concept synthesis
The main objective of planning was to establish a timetable including the content and scope of the thesis.
A requirements analysis was done, resulting in a list consisting of all the requirements the maneuvering system must fulfill. The requirements were based on following fields of technology and operations:
-Hydrodynamics, hydrostatics, signature, shock, performance and failure mode.
-UUV and diving operations (including retrieving and delivering of UUV and divers), emergency propulsion and maneuvering in harbor.
Consequently a functional analysis was done to analyze the necessary functions to achieve the requirements and to perform a position study of the maneuvering system. The functional analysis resulted in a principal solution consisting of the functions with the associated performance requirements and positioning instructions.
Furthermore the concept synthesis was done based on the principal solution resulting in six different concepts, where two of them met the requirements from Kockums most successfully. The two concepts also fulfilled the functions required, to perform all of the operations, and thus was chosen as proposed solutions. (Less)
