Abstract
The presence of God and religion in America is a well known fact, and for many Americans also of great importance. My interest places focus on the none-believers living in a country where God always is present. The religious climate in America is changing and the amount of none-believers is growing progressively. Changes are necessary to make the balance of power between believers and none-believers more equal and I consider president Obama to be an important actor in this process. By using Faircloughs critical discourse analysis and sociological theories I analyze speeches by president Obama over a period of four years, to locate the role of God and religious belief. In addition to this I also aim to find the presence of none-believers in... (More)

By using Faircloughs critical discourse analysis and sociological theories I analyze speeches by president Obama over a period of four years, to locate the role of God and religious belief. In addition to this I also aim to find the presence of none-believers in the same speeches, and analyze in what way they are being presented. The results of this study show that God and religious belief play a significant role in Obamas speeches. Furthermore Obama, through his discourse, is making changes that have the ability to affect the American society and the implicit assumptions of the American people. (Less)
