Abstract
This thesis deals with religion in the secular and democratic state. To demonstrate the complex tension between the freedom of religion and secular principles, Jürgen Haber-mas's theories about the post-secular society has been used to implement a critical dis-course analysis which examines five debating articles that specifically focuses on the question about the call to prayer for Muslims in Sweden. The aim of the thesis was to illustrate that our use of language constitutes specific social identities and relations. The research question in this thesis is as follows; which positions are the most prominent in the discourse, and how can these be understood and managed through Habermas's theo-ries about the post secular society? The most prominent position are expressed in two different ways, one refers to the negative freedom of religion and are characterized by a vision, that there is a certain importance in protecting Swedish culture and tradition. The other position highlights the positive freedom of religion and is based on a vision about equality between people regardless of their religious affiliation. The analysis also reveals a strong credence for the secular state and the value in protecting the secular principles. The result is that we through our language are involved in constituting the society we live in. This has been showed by an illumination of the links between the specific discourse and xenophobic and religiously discriminatory tendencies. (Less)
